What We Do » Mission for Independence » Drop-in Centre
The Wellington City Mission Drop-in Centre is a safe haven for people from all walks of life. A place to relax over a hot drink and be in the company of others, or a place to be away from the pressures of everyday life. A place where meals are served for nourishment rather than for profit.
At the moment, the Drop-in Centre supports around 80 people each day. We ask people for a 20c koha for a cup of tea, coffee or milo. Soup and bread is available daily at no charge. Often sandwiches, rolls, pies and cakes are also available at no cost, but for larger meals we will request a koha to help us cover some costs.
Music, television, board games and jigsaws are available for use.
A part-time supervisor is on duty but most of the catering and cleaning is undertaken by volunteers. The smooth running of the Drop-in Centre depends largely on volunteers, and new volunteers are always needed. In the 2010-2011 year alone, volunteer hours in both our Foodbank and Drop-in Centre totalled nearly 4,500, proving yet again the dedication and resilience of The Mission's volunteer network.
Special events such as a mid-winter feast or a Christmas BBQ are arranged with corporate sponsorship.
Monday to Friday 10.00am to 1.45pm at 200 Riddiford Street, Newtown, Wellington
