Mission for Independence

The Mission for Independence programme provides services to address the difficulties that people experience arising from poverty.  These manifest themselves as unemployment, isolation, debt, accommodation issues, addictive behaviour and family difficulties.  The Mission uses a holistic approach offering a variety of services and supports.  Service users can access any individual part of the programme, or more complex issues can be case managed by the social work programme.

During winter, we profile the work of the Mission for Independence in our latest Newsletter, which may be downloaded here ... Mission for Independence 2013 Newsletter.

The objective of this programme is to:

Help clients to confront and deal with the personal issues that have contributed to their welfare dependency

Assist them to manage their affairs so that they can live within their means and move on to being independent

We provide the following services through our Mission for Independence programme:

A Drop-in Centre for those who are socially isolated - a friendly place to meet others, enjoy a meal, engage in safe social contact and participate in some organised activities

A free Budget Service for practical advice, support and advocacy to assist with financial problems

A Foodbank programme, providing supplementary and emergency food assistance.  This service is available from 10.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Thursday and 10.30am to 3.00pm Fridays.  Mission food parcels are designed to supplement (not replace) a service user's weekly grocery shop

A Mission for Independence social worker is also available to listen to problems and discuss options and possibilities

We accept referrals from community agencies, health professionals, Government agencies, families and of course, self-referrals.  Service users can access any individual part of the programme, or more complex issues can be case managed by our social work programme.

This service is free to people living in the Greater Wellington region.
